Actor Darren Criss, who performed the chart-topping cover version of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" on TV show "Glee", has landed a regular role on the Fox TV show, creator Ryan Murphy said. Murphy told the afterelton.com blog that Fox television had "just signed a deal" with 23 year-old Criss. "Darren has become such a sensation in one week, which I love," Murphy told afterelton.com at Saturday's 39th Gala for the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center. "I think there's a hunger for him and a positive relationship role model. He'll definitely continue through the year and longer. We just signed a deal with him," Murphy added. A representative for Criss told The Hollywood Reporter that the deal is not "formal," adding "it appears he will be a series regular." Criss had a role in the short-lived NBC TV drama "Eastwick" last year but was otherwise virtually unknown before his debut on "Glee" last week as a gay student in an all-male high school choir. He previously performed and helped to write the YouTube Harry Potter spoof "A Very Potter Musical." According to record label Columbia, which releases "Glee" soundtracks, his largely acapella rendition of "Teenage Dream" sold more than 55,000 on its release last Tuesday -- the highest first-day sales for one of the show's songs. Murphy said he was undecided on whether Criss' character Blaine would become the screen boyfriend of Chris Colfer's Kurt. "That I have not decided. We're writing it. I want to see what people's reaction to that is. Part of me thinks he should be the boyfriend, part of me thinks he should just be the mentor. I didn't want to decide that until we got into sort of the middle of the season. We're figuring it out now," Murphy said.
